The 2025 TGRA GR CUP season has kicked off with an eventful weekend at the NTI Townsville 500, with guest driver Declan Fraser taking out two of the three races, and debut-driver Oliver Wickham scoring an impressive triple podium at just 15 years old.
A clean and fast Race 1 provided a successful start to the weekend, with two fresh faces to the category on the podium including Oliver Wickham in second, and local Townsville racer Lachlan Evennett in third, both behind guest driver Declan Fraser.
Race 2 proved to be more eventful with five drivers not finishing, which saw the field behind the safety car for much of the race. However, Jett Murray, who is in his second season with the TGRA GR CUP, claimed his first podium with a 3rd-place finish behind Oliver Wickham and Declan Fraser.
Despite the disruption in Race 2, Declan Fraser managed to set a new race lap record on the way to his podium finish, posting a time of 1:27.9145 to beat Matt Hillyer’s 1:28.8706 lap set last year.
In the third and final race, 2024 GR CUP Championship runner-up James Lodge worked his way up from 4th to the front of the field on the first lap. After a tight battle with Fraser across the final few laps, he managed to secure the win.
Guest drivers and Supercar alumni Declan Fraser and Tim Slade were on hand across the weekend to provide mentoring to young drivers while also competing in each race, finishing the round 1st and 17th, respectively.
The second round of the five-round 2025 TGRA GR CUP season takes place for the first time at Ipswich Super 440 from 8-10 August.
